Finding a good over the counter acne treatment can be difficult! Many of them seem harsh and advertise themselves as blackhead busting and blemish reducing, however I am often left with sore, red and unhappy skin. Prescription acne treatments have been the only help for my skin (- read my pills & potions post) and my go-to facial cleansers and toners often change as I find different ones that I like. Clearogen is for sure one of my new favourite drug-store acne treatments! Its a three-step system which is great to enable a routine in your skincare regime and each step works to target acne in various ways. I noticed changes in my skin almost immediately after using this product and even further as the first few months of use continued. I am very happy I found this product, and will definitely continue using it, especially the facial cleanser as this is my favourite component of the kit! So allow me to discuss the basics of Clearogen and show you visibly how it has helped me.
How Clearogen Treats the Root Cause of Acne, Not Just Symptoms!
I have researched a lot, and received lots of information from the Clearogen team on how their products actually work. Clearogen’s main focus is to address Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) a more potent form of testosterone, which can lead to acne. This is the ‘hormonal problem’ commonly referred to as the cause of acne. The ingredients within the Clearogen products which aim to target this are Linoleic Acid, Beta-Sitosterol and Green Tea Catechins. These ingredients inhibit the 5 Alpha Reductase enzyme (5AR) which converts testosterone to DHT, dealing with the cause of the acne. Alongside this are the active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid which kill bacteria and unclog pores – treating the symptoms, not the root cause.
My skin has clearly improved (see my progress below!) since using this treatment, obviously the main pro here. I really like how the cleanser is a foam pump, you only need a tiny bit to cover your face. The set that I have states that it lasts for 2 months, and it definitely does. I have been using it since the beginning of April and I still have a tiny bit left – getting ready to put a new order in!
Left skin pretty dry in the areas I used it a lot – the areas with the most blemishes. However, I am aware this is often the case with many acne treatments, as they remove the oil leaving dry skin. On some occasions the dryness was really getting me down. I would notice that as the day went on my skin would look flakey and sometimes even be sore and hurt from the dryness and unfortunately applying moisturiser didn’t help much! This would be the biggest downside for me, but as horrible as it feels at the time, its definitely better (I believe) than having the spots. And also this was occasional, not something I had to deal with all the time which was a bonus.
At this time, I was using the lotion both morning and night, following the routine. Eventually, after dealing with the dryness for a while I decided to skip the lotion in the morning routine and opt for my regular moisturiser La Roche Posay’s Effaclar H and only use the lotion prior to bed. This reduced the dryness significantly and yet still kept as many blemishes at bay as using it both AM and PM.
Benzoyl Peroxide Vs Sulfur Lotion
The third step in this treatment regime is the topical lotion. There are two forms of this: the Benzoyl Peroxide Lotion and the Sulfur Lotion. I chose the Sulfur lotion, as being an acne sufferer for many years I have already tried many benzoyl peroxide products, including those prescribed by my doctor. For many people benzoyl peroxide is a miracle treatment for their acne. I believe, however, that this is not great for sensitive skin – like mine. As previously mentioned, several acne treatments cause severe dryness, but benzoyl peroxide always burns my skin and leaves it painful, and I know that this is common among people with extremely sensitive skin. Therefore, I decided to try the sulfur lotion, which is most definitely less harsh and feels soothing and calming on my skin. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with sensitive skin who finds it difficult to use other acne treatments with strong harsh chemicals including benzoyl peroxide. If you know that your skin reacts fine with benzoyl peroxide then by all means give that a try as it is definitely great for acne! If your not sure, I recommend trying a test patch before rubbing a lotion such as the Clearogen benzoyl peroxide lotion all over your face!
Travelling with Clearogen
Unfortunately there are no travel sizes suitable for the carry on luggage on airplanes however I managed to pack my Clearogen into empty travel size containers to take on my travels around the USA. I wouldn’t have wanted to be without it on my trip!
UPDATE: CLEAROGEN DO SELL TRAVEL SIZES IF YOU WANT TO PURCHASE @ SEPHORA.

From left to right, Image 1: 4th April 2017 prior to using clearogen, if you enlarge you can see how incredibly greasy my skin looks and lots of pimples. Unfortunately I am wearing make-up on this picture, really regret that I didn’t take a better before picture! Image 2: 17th April 2017 I had only been using clearogen for around a week, my skin looks a lot less greasy already – however a little red! Image 3: 21st April 2017 I was so happy with my skin at this point! So clear and smooth, less red and I genuinely felt more confident. (P.S I am not wearing make-up here). Image 4: 1st June 2017 Skin is still looking amazing. Image 5: 26th June 2017 I wanted to include this picture as this past week I’ve had a few breakouts, they have really been getting me down, and when you look at the image, you can see its not actually that bad, its just a little frustrating, however this was two days ago and they’re already getting better and back to normal. You can also still see on this image how clear my forehead and cheeks are as well as a lot less oil!
You may wonder why May is not included, I was travelling some of America during that time so I was so busy taking pictures didn’t really cross my mind. But during this time my skin was pretty good, with the odd flare up around the mouth. Still trying to decide what may have caused these breakouts!
Overall Clearogen has been one of the best store-bought acne treatments I have ever found, and I intend to continue to use it! Check out their website at www.clearogen.com if you want to find out more or order too!
June is Acne Awareness Month:
As acne awareness month comes to an end, I decided that there should be a detailed, dedicated blog post to Clearogen as it is one of my top skincare finds of this year.
