Mineral foundations are a big ‘hype’ today because of all the harsh chemical’s and toxins that are commonly put into make-up and skincare products. And we know that none of those chemicals can be helping our skin. I am a big fan of mineral foundations, particularly bare minerals as they are much safer and cause less harm to your skin. I feel a little less guilty about wearing foundation on my acne-prone skin when I know its less likely to do more bad than good. I recently became aware of an upcoming brand dusty girls, an Australian company with their own mineral foundation, and this made me feel just as good as my trusty bare minerals.
A Mineral Foundation Free of Toxins
Dusty girls make up, is a part of the MooGoo skincare range, these skincare and make-up products are natural and toxic free-alternatives to generic products on the market.
How DustyGirls Foundation Looks
(Picture on the left prior to application of make-up, post-cleansed and moisturised face. Picture on the right, I am wearing only dusty girls mineral foundation and my bare minerals bronzer).
I really like the lightweight feel of dusty girls mineral foundation on my face, I am wearing shade shade ‘Fair Minerals w/ Pink Sunrise Tones’ which is perfect for my skin (and I completely guessed when ordering it online). I also think it gives really good coverage, my redness is hidden and covers most of my spots really well. The addition of my bare minerals bronzer and highlighter finishes off my day-to-day look. However, I would like to try the bronzer by dusty girls so it’s currently in my shopping bag!
Powder vs Liquid Foundation
For everyday foundation at work or school I always used to wear liquid foundation but I would find that mid-day the make-up would feel greasy and like it was running down my face. Any powder I used to use (would be cheap and light coverage) would prevent this slightly when added over my liquid foundation however it would often show up the dry patches in my skin (the most annoying skin type acne + dry skin). When I heard that people used these mineral foundations as there only foundation, I was confused. I didn’t think a loose power could provide full coverage, and I also thought it would just make my skin look dry. I was completely wrong. My bare minerals matte foundation and my dusty girls mineral foundation both equally provide perfect coverage for everyday use, they absorb the oil making my skin look more matte and also do not highlight any dryness. Don’t get me wrong I still own a liquid foundation (right now this is cover girl) but I only ever use this when I am going somewhere on a special occasion or out for the night to give a little bit of further coverage. But I definitely stick to these powders for everyday use, and I feel a lot less guilty about clogging my pores and causing more breakouts when I do.
I think its also important to mention the foundation is SPF 15, which is a great base to protect from the sun. Many people skip sun protection in their daily routine as they think its not important, which is not true, no matter whether you live in a hot country or not. Having SPF added allows you to apply it without even having to think about it – perfect!
The foundation comes in various shades, which is characterised by your tone (fair, medium, dark) and also your undertones (neutral, warm and cool) which enable to hide any unwanted yellow or red tones in your skin. You can take the quiz on the dusty girls website to determine what shade you are.
Kabuki Brush This brush is my favourite brush ever. Since I bought it I have never ever changed the brush no matter what powder foundation I was using. Its the perfect size to swirl around the lid once you have tapped some of the loose powder into it, and allows flawless application. Also, the bristles do not fall out, which is a problem I find with many make-up brushes (even good brands such as the bare minerals brushes!). The website recommends circular motions during application which I think works really well.
Earth Cream for Acne-Prone Skin I haven’t tried this product but whilst browsing on their site recently I decided I would like to give this a try. This product is aimed to cover blemishes and blur any imperfections, with chemical products replaced by natural oils that promote skin healing such as Manuka tree leaf oil and Nigella Sativa Oil. These oils aim to keep your skin healthy even once you have removed the make-up. Again, I love the idea that whilst wearing your make-up it’s actually doing some good to your skin and helping it rather than clogging your pores and causing damage. So this product is definitely on my current ‘wish list’.
