So I was very unaware until today that June is actually Acne Awareness Month! Which I think its so exciting and important, after googling it more today I have noticed its not well publicised and not many others are aware of this either.
Suffering with acne is the main reason in which I started this blog and gave me the inspiration to do so as I really want to help others who suffer with it…
I recently completed by third month of roaccutane (isotretinoin) so just wanted to post a little update! You can read all about my last update here. For the most of this month my skin felt amazing, barely any spots whatsoever. However this past week it hasn’t been at its best, my dermatologist said its normal to have break outs and it could be due to exam stress. I still have 2 months left to go so hopefully it will sort itself out very soon! In the photo to the left I am wearing a tiny bit of my bare minerals make-up (which you can read about here). Since my last post about roaccutane I have discovered some amazing products which have really helped with the side effects (a lot of dryness!)
It is very common to get eczema whilst on roaccutane, and eczema is something I suffer with anyway so I was a little worried about this when I started the treatment. One product I have found which has been amazing is E45’s Emollient Body Wash which I use every day in the shower in places which I am prone to eczema. I have literally had no outbreaks of eczema, not even a little bit! You can purchase this from boots for £4.29 – here.
I also tried out the E45 dry scalp shampoo, as obviously my hair and scalp are also dry! I don’t really think this has made it any better as I haven’t noticed any difference. However, I guess its probably better than using any old shampoo. Its almost running out so I think I will try out a different brand/product for my hair soon!
Finally, Dr Dans Cortibalm which I have mentioned before has drastically improved my lips! I have been using this every few days, and diluting it down with normal lip products like vaseline (as its a steroid so you must be careful!). You can read my full review of this product here.
I have found the BEST lip balm ever – one that actually works. I have literally been using it for just 3 days and the way my lips have healed is amazing. You can see how dry and sore my lips are in the first photo compared to now. Its called DR DAN’S CORITBALM. It is the only lip balm with 1% hydrocortisone which is a steroid cream that acts as an anti-inflammatory. Hydrocortisone is a common steroid cream used to treat skin conditions such as eczema. (I also highly recommend hydrocortisone for eczema, I use it when I get it every now and again and it clears it up straight away!). The rest of the ingredients are common lip balm ones such as petroleum jelly and beeswax. Roaccutane (Isotretinoin) for my acne has completely ruined my lips and no matter how much vaseline I put on it wasn’t getting any better. But this is a product I recommend to anyone using roaccutane as its really cleared up my lips and they’re no longer painful. I also recommend for anyone who gets dry lips in general too!
One safety issue I need to make clear is that because it is a steroid cream it can thin your skin. Creams like this are only recommended use for 7 days. For most people a 7 day use of this would be enough time to heal and keep lips soft and moisturised for a long time. However, as I and many people reading this may be taking roaccutane it will probably continue after the 7 days because the roaccutane will still be being taken – making the lips worse. Therefore, I am using this lip balm on a night to clear it up and then during the day using my Eucerin – Aquaphor. This ensures it isn’t going to thin my skin or make it worse in the long run. It is also possible to mix it with some moisturiser/vaseline to dilute it down a bit to be safer and still work great!
WHERE TO BUY?? The main problem with this is It can only be bought in America so I ordered mine from ebay! I got 3 tubes for £8 which I think is a bargain. Just type ‘Dr Dan’s Cortibalm’ into ebay.
You can check out the official website here: www.drdanslipbalm.com
I cannot even explain how much I LOVE this product, and how quickly its worked too, made me much happier!

So I have now been on roaccutane (isotretinoin) for 2 months (out of my 5) and I am already starting to see a difference. They say to begin with your skin can get a lot worse which it did but then eventually start to improve. I definitely feel my skin is so much less oily, it feels a lot more matte which is amazing! But they’re not kidding when they tell you that it dries everything out. My hair, skin, lips (especially) and eyes are all a lot drier. As well as giving me more frequent headaches, so it is really important to drink plenty of water! It also feels weird not putting on any spot treatment creams every night, because now I mainly need moisturisers. I mainly use Cetaphil Moisturiser as prescribed by my doctor. If I do get any new spots I occasionally use Manuka Doctors – Blemish Cream which isn’t very drying so it works well. I am still on the hunt to find the best lip balm and have ordered a new one which I will review when I have tried – but currently I am using Aquaphor by Eucerin which I have reviewed here.
