Last night I attempted a homemade honey and oats face mask. It was very messy and didn’t look particularly appealing, but it has many great properties that should help improve many skin types. I just mixed oats and honey in a bowl until it formed a paste and then applied it to my face (this was the most difficult part – it went everywhere!). I then left it on my skin for about 10 minutes – I probably should have left it on a little bit longer, so If I did this again I would.
Why did I use these ingredients?
Oats: I just used general porridge oats which are known to neutralise your skins pH. This therefore protects your skin from irritation, soreness and itchiness. It also helps lock in moisture to your skin, helping with issues with dry and flakey skin. I also found that the use of the oats added slight exfoliation as it is known to remove dead skin cells. But it is not too harsh – my skin personally is too sensitive for some of these vigorous exfoliating scrubs on the market. Oatmeal also contains saponins, these allow it to be a good facial cleanser. Saponins cause it to produce a foamy texture when added to water to give it a facial wash property. There are literally endless properties of why oats are good when applied to your skin (also good to eat!)
Honey: Honey has many similar properties to oats such as locking in moisture and preventing dryness. But the main reason I have used honey is for its anti-microbial properties as it can help in wound healing. Therefore it has known to be helpful in reducing acne scars.
So I have now been on roaccutane (isotretinoin) for 2 months (out of my 5) and I am already starting to see a difference. They say to begin with your skin can get a lot worse which it did but then eventually start to improve. I definitely feel my skin is so much less oily, it feels a lot more matte which is amazing! But they’re not kidding when they tell you that it dries everything out. My hair, skin, lips (especially) and eyes are all a lot drier. As well as giving me more frequent headaches, so it is really important to drink plenty of water! It also feels weird not putting on any spot treatment creams every night, because now I mainly need moisturisers. I mainly use Cetaphil Moisturiser as prescribed by my doctor. If I do get any new spots I occasionally use Manuka Doctors – Blemish Cream which isn’t very drying so it works well. I am still on the hunt to find the best lip balm and have ordered a new one which I will review when I have tried – but currently I am using Aquaphor by Eucerin which I have reviewed here.
One of my top dry skin products at the moment is Eucerin – Aquaphor it essentially feels like vaseline but doesn’t feel as greasy. It is fragrance and preservative free and non-comedogenic so its not harmful for your skin! My lips are extremely dry at the moment, even cracked and this is great for any one who has sore and dry lips – but you can use it anywhere! The one con I would say about this product is that its pretty thick, so the best time for application (particularly on the face) is before bed. I bought this product after reading many reviews that its helpful for people on roaccutane which I feel it is, but anyone who suffers with dry skin this product is perfect!
Buy Now: It is available from boots for just £9 which you can order here.
Recently I was introduced to bare minerals, I’d never really heard much about it before but now I wouldn’t go anywhere without it! It is amazing for anyone with skin issues as it is not bad for your skin in anyway – so you don’t have to feel guilty about wearing it! I love it because it’s really light weight but also provides amazing coverage. I personally use the fairly light original foundation (link to purchase available below) which gives me flawless coverage I need but also doesn’t cause further breakouts! When I started roaccutane I knew my skin would become severely dry and I didn’t know if this powder foundation would be a problem however it’s not! Even though my skin is dry this foundation still works flawlessly – except on the rare occasion when my skin is having a very bad day.
On my birthday recently I went to go buy some more and decided to buy the complexion pack instead, this included the original foundation and matte foundation (in smaller sizes), a bronzer, primer and a brush – and something else? I can happily say that I am pleased with these other products too. The primer allows smoother make up applications and helps soften blemishes and dry skin. The bronzer also gives a very nice glow, and the brush helps for flawless application.
I am still yet to try the matte foundation as my skin is dry at this current time rather than oily I don’t see it necessary – but anyone who has tried and has any opinions please let me know!
so yeah bare minerals is one of my top skincare brands and there are still so many products of theirs I aim to try and will eventually post, the best thing is I know that they will not cause any problems to my easily aggravated skin! – give it a try!
