My biggest skincare rule is DO NOT sleep in your make-up. Although some times I make the odd mistake – and instantly regret it the next morning. Going to sleep with a fresh cleansed face is essential, especially for those of you wanting clear and healthy skin! Here are my tips for removing your make-up thoroughly before a good nights beauty sleep.
1. Micellar water wins over facial wipes
Take a cotton wool pad and apply micellar water (My Favourite: La Roche Posay’s Micellar Water) and wipe in circular motions across your face. Use a separate pad for hard to remove eye make-up. For a deeper cleanse dermatologist Debra Jalliman recommends adding a small amount of your facial cleanser to the micellar water on the cotton pad. Many dermatologists also recommend to avoid facial wipes – yes they’re better than sleeping in your make-up but they always make me break out!
2. Cleanse your face – with a good cleanser and washcloth!
Its important to make sure that your fingers are completely clean before using them to rub cleanser on your face. But even better use a clean washcloth or facial sponge ( My Favourite: Dr Sponge Original Facial Sponge) to apply the cleanser and wash your face with a little warm water. It is important to use the correct cleanser for your skin type. My Favourite: Avene’s Cleanance Gel as it does not contain Sodium Laureth Sulphate – a culprit of causing acne. For dry or sensitive skin Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser is great.
3. Pat Dry
Don’t be too harsh with your skin when drying it with a towel, pat gently.
4. Lock in Moisture
Now is the perfect time to apply your moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. My Favourite is La Roche Posay’s Effaclar H which is great to reduce redness and excellent to use post-accutane.
As you may know, I have spent the last year studying abroad and now being an intern in Arizona. In less than 2 weeks I will be leaving and heading back to England. While I have been here there are some products that I have loved, that I am definitely stocking up on before I leave. Here are my USA favourites.
We all know that cleaning your make-up brushes is unbelievably important, yet we often forget or just skip it because we are too lazy. I’m not going to lie, this is also the case with me! But think about all the dirt and bacteria that remains in those brushes. You can see it for yourselves too, when eventually we get around to cleaning them, the amount of foundation that runs off your beauty blender or brush. It’s actually pretty disgusting. Which is why this weeks ‘skincare tips’ post is a reminder: clean your make-up brushes!
If you’re from the US then you’ve probably heard of Glossier and if you’re from anywhere and a reader of beauty blogs then you’ve definitely heard of intothegloss.com. Glossier is a beauty brand started by the creators of intothegloss.com, particularly Emily Weiss, aimed to provide fun and personal beauty products. I got introduced to Glossier earlier this year from a friend who let me try their boy brow and I loved it. After trying this, I decided to order some of their products and give them a try. When these products arrived there was a slogan written on the inside of the box that read: Skin first, Make-up second, smile always. As soon as I read this I instantly was a Glossier fan, their philosophy is that skincare is essential, make-up is a choice. Skin should most definitely always come first and is most definitely essential, this is a ritual I live by for sure.
Mineral foundations are a big ‘hype’ today because of all the harsh chemical’s and toxins that are commonly put into make-up and skincare products. And we know that none of those chemicals can be helping our skin. I am a big fan of mineral foundations, particularly bare minerals as they are much safer and cause less harm to your skin. I feel a little less guilty about wearing foundation on my acne-prone skin when I know its less likely to do more bad than good. I recently became aware of an upcoming brand dusty girls, an Australian company with their own mineral foundation, and this made me feel just as good as my trusty bare minerals.
